The Irish pennywhistle (also known as tin whistle, fipple flute, Irish whistle, feadan) is a whistle flute. Ancestors of this instrument have been found during excavations of the streets of Dublin, showing that 12th century Vikings played them.

The first metal tin whistle was made in 1843 by Robert Clarke, founder of the famous Clarke Tinwhistle Company. These tin whistles were modified from a wooden whistle, and Robert Clarke charged one penny for them. Hence the name we often know it by today...the pennywhistle.
