Quena

The notched, end-blown Quena originated in the Andes region of South America--Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Argentina. They have been made out of wood, clay, stone, and bone.

This picture shows an Educci quena headjoint made for Boehm flute. This headjoint allows Tereasa to produce the tone of a quena while maintaining the flexibility of the Boehm flute's chromatic scale.

Quenas were once banned in Peru by the Spanish government, which said that the quena's song inspired "indecent emotions" among the natives.
